Aircraft Handsets

We'll satisfy your curiosity right now - we're talking about that telephone-like device used for internal communication and for cabin announcements on aircraft.  Actually, they were originally not all that different from old-fashioned Ma Bell telephone handsets - heavy, more or less indestructible and occasionally used as a gavel to get the cabin's attention.  "Please remain seated until . . ."

Whether you are a pilot, a flight attendant or a passenger, once you board an aircraft, clear and reliable communication on board is vital for your safety.  The exchange of critical information is required at all times and quality standards for technical performance and reliability are exceptionally high.

Holmberg has been designing and building communications equipment for use in aircraft for over 50 years. They are an approved and certified manufacturer and maintenance organization of aviation products.  HOLMCO communications accessories are used by pilots and flight attendants, as well as air traffic controllers and ground staff.

The N40 is the latest handset in the Holmberg series.  These differ in an analog and digital version.  Both variants consist of three individual assemblies such as the handset, the cable and the support.  These can be replaced individually or ordered as a set.

Exclusively for the Airbus SA/LR Program, the analogue devices are used on the A320, A330 and A340 models.  In addition to the PTT button, they also have buttons in different designs that can be adapted to the customer's requirements.  So, the buttons range from 9 to 15, except the PTT button.

The analog handset version can be used as N-41 for all non-Airbus aircraft.  These differ neither in function nor in the available keyboard layouts.  The only changes here are to the rear of the housing, which, unlike the exclusive Airbus version, does not have a recess.  The N-41 also has a separate EASA certification.

The digital handsets are used on A350 and A380 exclusively and have a digital display and tree softkeys for menu selection in addition to the keypad.  Both device variants are available in the colors black, foggy, dark porcelain, pepperdust, and dawn dark.

Detail of the CMM of the N40A:

The CIDS Handset with Support Bracket (analog verrsion), in the following referred to as N40A, is used as a component of the aircraft Cabin Intercommunication Data System (CIDS).  One of its functions is to allow the crew members to communicate with each other or to talk to the passengers in the following operating modes:

  • Cabin Interphone - for interphone communications between different crew members
  • Service Interphone - for communication between Cabin or Flight Deck and Ground Crew
  • PA Announcements - for Passenger Address operations of Cabin or Flight Deck Crew

The Handset with Support Bracket is controlled by an 8-bit micro-controller, the ATmega 160V (in the following referred to as μC).  This device is based on an advanced RISC architecture and used to perform the functional control of the handset operations.  The μC's firmware is stored in the on-chip flash memory from which it runs directly when the micro-controller is reset.  The main operational static functions are:

  • Providing the dialing signals
  • Handling of audio signals
  • Switching the internal power supply in accordance with hook-on / hook-off status
  • Notification of PA/Direct PA by setting the key line
  • Frequency equalization and amplification of the microphone signal
  • Reduction of the power consumption when the handset is not in use - hooked on - and no call comes in (Standby Mode).  During this state, the handset backlight illumination switches off.

Detail of the CMM of the N40D:

The CIDS Handset with Support Bracket is used as a component of the aircraft Cabin Intercommunication Data System (CIDS).  Its function is to allow the crew members to communicate with each other or to talk to the passengers in the following 3 operating modes:

  • PA Announcements - for Passenger Address operations of cabin or flight deck crew
  • Cabin Interphone - for interphone communications between different crew members
  • Service Interphone - for communication between cabin or flight deck and ground crew

The Handset with Support Bracket is controlled by the Digital Signal Processing (DSP) system.  This system is used to perform the functional control, operation, data transmission, testing the handset and monitoring its modes and functions.  The Handset with Support Bracket has a serial digital interface that provides all the audio communication and the handset control.  The main operational static functions are:

  • Adoption of received data signals
  • Control of the cabin interphone and passenger address processing
  • Change of digital data into audio signals
  • Change of audio input signals into digital data
  • Transmission of digitized auto signals
  • Processing of internal commands and controls
  • Transmission of status results to the CIDS
  • Control of the serial input/output interfaces
  • Backlight illumination and the visual-dialling support (shown on a graphic display)
  • Reduction of the power consumption when the handset is not in use, - hooked on - and no call comes in (Stand-by Mode)  During this state, the handset backlight illumination switches off.
